Rev John Thornton has served in various places over 30 years in ministry.
He began ‘professional’ ministry as a Lay Ministry Assistant’ in the then Coffs Harbour Parish, serving mainly with the Sawtell congregation.
Now appointed as a Lay Pastor, he and his wife Veronica, travelled to Rouse Hill where they established a new faith community.
John was ordained as Minister of the Word in 2008.
In 2012 they moved to the Far North Coast where he led the Lismore Regional Mission as Superintendent Minister.
In his spare time John was also Chair of the Far North Coast Presbytery.
In retirement John has served in Supply at Kippax UC in the Canberra Presbytery and as Acting Associate Secretary for the Synod.
He was Chair of the Mid North Coast for four years, and will shortly complete five years of service as leader of the NSW-ACT Synod Placements Committee.
Prior to their travels in New South Wales John and Veronica lived in Victoria where John worked in the Textile industry and before moving into ministry was manager of a company in Melbourne.
John had an exciting ministry time in Victoria, heading up a Street Ministry in their local suburb, where a team from the local Uniting Church would spend their Friday and Saturday nights working with kids in the local area.
He also led an Open-Air Evangelism’ team that preached the gospel at the local shopping centre for several years.
John and Veronica have three children, five grandchildren and one dog, Digby.
